What is Primary Care Obstetrics?

Primary care obstetrics is delivered by Family Doctors.

Family doctors bring unique skills that combine a medical and holistic approach to maternity care. We get to know you and your family over time so that we can provide care you can trust.

As family doctors, we recognize birth as a natural event and are passionate about delivering excellent care that values women's choices.

We offer quality medical care focused on low-risk births. We provide you with the information and guidance you need to make the best decisions for you and your baby.

Family doctors offer care throughout your pregnancy and beyond including newborn care, breastfeeding support, general medicine and counselling.

Who can attend pregnancy care here?

Most pregnancies can be managed effectively by Family Doctors. We care for healthy, and low risk pregnancies, as well as manage common problems that come up (eg low thyroid, or anemia). If major problems occur, your family physician will work with obstetricians or other specialists to get you the care you need.

Who will be my doctor?

You can pick one of the doctors from our team! You will attend one location, and see the same doctor for all your prenatal visits. Our clinics are located in West-end Toronto and Etobicoke.

When it comes to labour and delivery, our doctors share the “call schedule”. That means whichever doctor from our group is on call the day (or night!) that you go into labour, will be looking after you in the hospital at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.

How do I become a patient?

If you are pregnant, you can simply call one of our clinics and request to become a patient. If you already have a family doctor, you can ask them to send a referral to us by fax. We will look after you during your pregnancy, after which you and your new baby will return for ongoing care with your usual family doctor.
